Austin conditions expertise
Hard water (~290 mg/L for Austin proper, even harder for Hill Country Trinity Aquifer customers), AC humidity crashes, summer heat, February freezes — Will knows which plants thrive in Southwest Austin and how to keep them that way year-round.

Indoor plants in Circle C Ranch
Circle C Ranch is a big, family-friendly master-planned community in far southwest Austin, full of newer homes with the open floor plans and generous windows builders favored over the last couple of decades. It sits on top of the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone — which is an environmental story more than a tap-water one, but it tells you something about the limestone-and-thin-soil country these homes are built on.
Your tap water is City of Austin supply, treated from the Highland Lakes on the Colorado River, so it is hard and chloraminated like the rest of town. (The aquifer underfoot is protected recharge land, not what comes out of your faucet.) That hardness leaves the familiar mineral crust on potting soil over time; here is how I manage it.
The newer Circle C homes tend to have bright, open rooms and a lot of west-facing glass paired with strong AC — so the usual southwest-Austin pattern applies: bright, hot light and dry indoor air that crisp the wrong plants. Matching species to each room is the fix. Good starting points are my reliable Austin houseplants and, for sunnier rooms, plants for big windows.
I care for indoor plants throughout Circle C and southwest Austin. If yours keep struggling, let me take a look — here is how a residential visit works.
