Dripping Springs is acreage country — the Gateway to the Hill Country — and that changes the whole conversation about houseplants. A huge share of homes out here are not on city water at all. They are on private wells pulling from the Trinity Aquifer, and that water behaves very differently from what comes out of an Austin tap.
Trinity well water is some of the hardest in the region, loaded with dissolved calcium and magnesium from the limestone. Because it is groundwater it usually does not carry the chloramine city water does — but it brings its own trap. Nearly every well home out here runs a water softener, and softened water is quietly one of the worst things you can give a houseplant: the softener swaps the hardness minerals for sodium, and that sodium builds up in the pot until roots start to fail. Add the dry Hill Country air, the limestone dust, and the big modern windows on a lot of the newer Dripping Springs builds, and you have a setup that quietly defeats plants people swear they cannot kill.
